The season opens on October 18 with “Radiant Mercy: Light, Love and the Human Spirit” an inspiring program featuring sacred masterworks of compassion and devotion, including Maurice Durufle’s Ubi Caritas, Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, Henryk Gorecki’s Totus Tuus and Ola Gjeilo’s Dark Night of the Soul.
The first half of the concert also includes two 20th century American songs that still resonate across generations today. Sounds of Silence is a familiar, haunting folk song released by Paul Simon in 1964 that contemplates loneliness and disconnection. The Chorale will perform Mark Hayes’ arrangement which transforms this well-known piece into a dramatic chorale work.
Somewhere, which was written for West Side Story, features soaring melodies by Leonard Bernstein and poignant lyrics by Stephen Sondheim that capture a longing for peace and reconciliation. Somewhere offers a vision of healing that prepares the audience for Bernstein’s sacred masterpiece – Chichester Psalms – in the concert’s second half.
